L’Atelier du Maquillage

Waaaaay back in the Fall, at the swanky Salons Hoche, I was invited to attend the launch party of the new eye make-up line by l’Atelier du Maquillage, a brand created by the popular beauty salons l’Atelier du Sourcil. The party was fabulous, with an amazing spread of hor d’oeuvres and an open bar, live music, and you could even get your eyebrows done at one of the beauty stations set up on one side of the rooftop even hall.

As I was discovering their new product before even knowing about the concept of their service, I was more  than intrigued to seek out a rendez-vous for an eyebrow makeover! Continue reading

Beauty is all in the Detaille

22 Feb

Mme Detaille, comtesse de PresleShe was one of the first women in Paris to acquire a motorized vehicle! The wealthy countess of Presle. She loved to drive, but like any self respecting parisienne at the time (or now for that matter) took great care to preserve her  beauty while remaining fantastically wild as one of the only women to drive a car around Paris. And in those days for a jolie automobilist, some beauty preservation was indeed urgently needed. Cars did not have a roof let alone a windshield! They looked something more like this :peugeot-1905 Continue reading

Science et Mer Paris – Make-Up Remover

4 Nov

After an article on make-up by Serge Lutens, I thought it would be fitting to write about a make-up remover!

A while back I introduced a cosmetic brand that I have been using ever since, but I didn’t talk about one of the products that I received from them at the presentation of their new cosmetic line : the make-up remover. To be precise : the écume lactée make-up remover 2 un 1 all skin types hypoallergenic paraben-free make-up remover for face and eyes. Whew!

Nécessaire de Beauté – Serge Lutens

Recently I was graciously invited to join a small panel of bloggers for a presentation of the Serge Lutens make-up line and what he calls the “nécessaire de beauté”. Beauty essentials. I love the Serge Lutens boutique at Palais Royal and have purchased and tested several of his perfumes. I love his work for its originality, it’s search for artistry with a palette of scents, and the way his perfumes can whisk me away somewhere else or invoke a striking emotion. So, of course I was curious to discover what he can do with make-up.

Continue reading

Pictours Paris Bridal Shoot

15 Sep

So, bridal modeling seems to be somewhat of a partime pro-bono vocation for me lately… I mean what’s not to love about getting primped and dolled up, putting on a frilly gown and prancing around in front of a camera! I mean who wouldn’t want ot do that!?!
So when Lyndsey Kent of Pictours Paris sent out a tweet looking for models to shoot a promo for her new bridal services and wedding package, I was all about that!

Laggridore, luxury perfume

30 Jul

image

I was contacted recently by a new perfume company and asked if I was interested in writing about their product. After a brief description and a browse of their website I said “Oui!” but that I thought it best if I “discovered” their perfume in person. (I much prefer to blog about things I have tasted or tested or touched. It gives a more authentic perception for my readers. So I set up a meeting with François Marmey who represents the company and is putting together an internet publicity campaign. He said I was one of the first bloggers to respond, which makes me happy to be one of the first bloggers to write about it from a first-hand experience! We met for an after-work glass of wine at the Crillon hotel (I figured that the discovery of a new luxe product called for a luxe setting). We took a table on the indoor courtyard patio as the weather was nice for a change, and the tables are large enough so we had space to spread out the products and test them.

So, this perfume…oh my goodness it is right up my alley!!!! It’s different, it’s luxurious (although not TOO expensive) and it’s beautiful. The three things I love about it the most are : The manner in which it is applied, the presentation of the product, and the reflection that has gone into so many aspects of this product to make it a true luxury product. Science et Mer Paris

27 Jun

I was recently invited to a presentation event of Science & Mer Paris products that took place in their lovely offices just be hind the Madeleine.

We were introduced to a brand that holds it’s clout in the scientific research used to create the cosmetics they sell. These laboratories, Science & Mer, produce cosmetics for many other brands (although they are restricted by contract from revealing which ones) for the past 25 years, and they finally decided to create their own brand to be able to profit from all that research and development that they do!

Caron, perfume and powder for a century

3 Jun

The perfume house of Caron has been around for over one hundred years. A small but respected entity, it was created in 1904 by Ernest Daltroff, a chemist from a family of perfume artists. He teamed up with his brother Raoul and Félicie Wanpouille who had been a popular dress maker and stylist. Together they began an enterprise that is still going strong today and seems to grow in prestige every year. Continue reading

Perfume Launch – Miriam by Andy Tauer

15 Apr

Antonio, the owner of my favorite little perfume shop in Paris, invite Chéri and I to the launch of a new perfume by Andy Tauer ~ maître parfumeur. This fragrance was created in lieu of his collaboration with film maker Brian Pera. Women’s Pictures, his 2011 film struck a creative chord in Andy Tauer and the two of them agreed to collaborate. Perfume plays a significant role in the lives of the characters in the film, and for Brian Pera it is an important element for character development in his film. For Andy Tauer, it is his life! Petit perfume palace

4 Jan

Marie Antoinette Paris, is the name of the tiny little boutique with a cheerful red façade at place Sainte Catherine in the Marais. Chéri and I discovered it a couple of years ago and were completely immersed in the charm not only of the space and décor of the store itself, but also the charm of Antonio de Figueiredo, the shop owner. I have never met anyone who loves perfumes, scents and eaux de toilette so much! His eyes sparkle when he tells you about the famous perfume worn by the lover of Sasha Guitry, or he swoons over the benefits of the mens skin care line that he sells, and he smiles and giggles while expressing his appreciation for the line of Portuguese perfumes and scented candles he has carried since he first opened. Antonio LOVES what he does. Continue reading

My new obsessions : Red and Blue

4 Sep

I have been in a red and blue mood lately. These two primary colors compliment eachother so well. Better than any other primary color combination in my opinion. Maybe I am a little late on this duo, I believe it was in a couple seasons ago…but I have decided that I am ready to accept these fun hues into my life. Mostly because I have decided that these will be the color themes of our wedding reception next summer….! LOL!

ENJOY!

Kelsey Close : Met modeling at the Zahair Murad presentation today in Paris’ 8th arrondissement for the AW1112 Paris fashion week, she stood out not only because she was wearing the most eye-catching gown of the collection, but because she has a simmering stare and a Betty Draper look (if Betty Draper were about 21). Somebody put her on the cover of Vogue please!

UPDATE :

As of the Summer of 2012, Kelsey has joined the modeling agency IMG. I am really looking forward to seeing what kind of work they are going to promote her into. I have been able to get to know her over the past several fashion week seasons, and have discovered a very down-to-earth young woman who has an open mind and is extremely kind hearted.

It all makes scents to me now!

1 Feb

I had been wanting to visit the Fragonard museum for quite some time now, knowing that the guided tour is free, and finally the opportunity came up. (It’s hard to make time for frivolous and fun things sometimes, even in the city of Paris…time, that ever fleeting escape artist…)

Photo : Fragonard web site

Sitting just behind the Garnier Opera house, the hôtel particulier (mansion house) in which the museum is house was designed by one of Garnier’s students, Lesoufaché, in 1860 and reminds us of the old Parisian splendor of the 19th century. Painted ceilings, gorgeous molding, gold-leafing and brilliant crystal chandeliers that date from the time the building was constructed… it’s enough to make you day-dream…

Photo : Fragonard website

But you don’t have much time to let your mind wander into 19th century land, when people wore top hats and carried canes and drove in carriages… because your highly knowledgeable guide has a thousand things to tell you about the history of perfume and how it came to Europe, France and on your wrist.

Photo : Fragonard web site

I learned that perfume was invented in the middle east for the Arabian royalty many many centuries ago… Grecian folks also used scents as offerings to gods. Perfume in it’s primitive form was created out of oils and fats that were permeated with the scents of plants and flowers… Later, perfume then was begotten from the condensation process that we all know of from watching that creepy movies (based on a novel) called “Perfume”, and an essential oil is extracted. But I won’t tell you all of the secrets I learned at the Fragonard perfume museum…because it is so much more entralling when you here about it in that exquisit building. I will tell you though that I learned that were very few perfumers in the world today, in French they are called “Nez” as in nose! There are perhaps around 100, in the entire world and only a couple of them actually create for their own brand (Serge Lutens is one of those)! It is not easy to become a “nez”, you must have abachelor’s of chemistry degree to even be considered at the schools of perfume. In France there are 2 schools, one in Grasse and one in Versailles. The school in Versailles required two years to get the degree (that is if you are accepted into the school and can handle the rigorous studies) and there is an age maximum (around 32 I believe). The school in Grasse does not have an age requirement and the degree lasts one year.

Photo : Fragonard web site

Perfume is made from essential oils and is composed with only 25% of alcohol, and eau de toilette is made with 50% alcohol… this tid-bit and other fun things to know about perfume and the work of a “nez” are to be discovered at this magnificent museum. And the ground floor is their boutique where you get high quality French made products for bargain prices, because there is not middle-mad seller between Fragonard fabrication and …Fragonard boutiques!

Serge Lutens – a voyage for the senses

3 Jan

P1030144

There is a place where you can take a trip of sensations, olfactory voyages down memory lane or places yet to be discovered.

P1030142
Tucked away in the gallery boutiques of the Palais Royal, Serge Lutens hosts a magical journey in his boutique at the Shiseido shop. This place, conceptualized by Serge Lutens himself,is unique in the world, and the only place that sells his exclusive line :

Rich with colors and sensuality, these liquid elixirs come from classic and pure elements, that are married with care and creativity to the imagination of Mr. Lutens. And they do bring your imagination on a trip…somewhere… Come in and test these delicately concocted scents, each one unique, each one containing the recollection of places past or things yet to be seen, mysteries and memories, longings and luxurious possessions, these scents hold the promise of sensation.

P1030145Smell, test, describe, reminisce, wait, smell again, wonder, wander, indulge, return, test, savor, dream…

Serge Lutens…he starts out at 14 years old, in a chic hair salon in Paris, where he dolls up his friends, and photographs them… this gains him a leg up from Vogue who hires him to do make and hairstyles for their magazine, and then Dior stakes their claim on him, asking him to create a line of luxury make-up… he continues his photography and exposes it in New York and other museums around the world, he makes movies, he becomes a nez, a perfume creator, a marketing expert, an interior designer…what DOESN’T he do?!? A creative person by nature, he finds sensuality everywhere. You can find it at 142, Galerie de Valois, 75001 Paris

Aouva Beauté, 6 rue Brantôme 75003

…and other beauty moments from the quartier de l’horloge…

Tucked away in a pedestrian section of the quartier de l’horloge near the Centre Pompidou is a happy little beauty salon. Aouva Beauté; where men and women alike can get their beauty fix.

I had an appointment for an evening that happened to be mighty cold outside, to get an oriental pedicure with polished toenails. Upon entering the small salon, I saw two clients getting their foot care done up and an esthetician on a stool carefully filing away. I was early and took a seat on one of the wicker stools indicated to me… right next to the cutest little long-haired chihuahua ever! It’s name is Bounty (like the candy bar), and he immediately hopped into my lap in order to be pet. Ok, my day was just totally made!

I sat there tweeting and petting the dog, but no one else in the small room was saying anything. I found it slightly odd. And even more odd, when I realized that the two other clients that where present, knew each other and had come in together. How weird to sit there silently and not talk to your friend that you are getting a” beaté des pieds” with! Anyway… after they left and I hopped into the pedicure chair, I chatted away with Anaïs, my esthetician for the evening. I asked her a thousand questions about the beauty salon and her job, and she graciously answered all of them.

Aouva Beauté has been there for a year. Three exotic women welcome their clients as if they were friends. Aouva, Anaïs and Morgiane. They have been written about in Femme Actuelle, My Little Paris, and have had deals with Groupon Paris and DealGroop. (the Groupon deal was a little too successful, but it is bringing in many clients through their door).

They offer just about everything you could hope for in a beauty salon :

Mani-pedis of course.

Facials

Massages (that Aouva told me were the real deal deep tissue Californian massage, hallelujah! –she lived in LA for some time, and speaks perfect English–)

Hair removal (with wax or thread –indian style) for men and women!

Eyelash extension!

Permanent make-up (make-up tattooing)

Help with your silhouette

And more!

And what’s better than this? : They are open Monday to Sunday (closed Saturdays) from 10am to 8pm!

Boutique éphémère… fashion longue durée – Temporary store… long term fashion

15 Sep

éphémère – that which does not last long…

In the center of Paris at Châtelet, there is a little boutique of “treasures”… It’s like the jam center of a fresh beignet, or the ganache filling in the middle of a macaron (but not the macarons from McDo, this is the shopping equivalent of a one-of-a-kind-hand-made-naturally-flavored macaron).

It is also a place to return to more than once, because the choices are always changing and revolving. Haut Les Arts Boutique des Créateurs is a store that is collectively rented and run by a group of artists and créateurs. Each week some take down their exposition, some stay on longer and others arrive. And there’s something fro every style and budget.

Did you know that coal from wood has beneficial characteristics, and that it’s use is an old Japanese tradition?

Lorène Hayat and Hirohiko Kamiya design jewelry from coal that comes from Holm oak trees from the protected forests in the Kishu region of Japan. The combustion and treatment of the wood is very meticulous and must be done by skilled workers. The resulting substance has a porous structure. It is great for absorbing humidity and odors as well as toxic substances in the air and in water. It’s a natural anti-termite product when placed under the floorboards. It is also believed to absorb electromagnetic waves that come from our various electronic devices, and it can also eliminate CO2 and has infra-rouge properties that ameliorate blood circulation. Find Charcoal Eskimeit in the boutique and on-line.

And last but not least, part of fashion is beauty and well-being, and Les Secrets de Loly understands that as well as the need for quality, natural products that are hand made in respect nature. (Photos from her website where you can purchase her products if you don’t make it to the store at Châtelet).
