Summer was here, and didn’t this Brit know it! Anything generally above ten degrees celsius sends me into a broad-spectrum decline of complaining how unbearably sweltering it is and re-sighting dramatically about how I may not make it to the fall, by falling face first on to a thirty degree pavement. I was already looking forward to the fall, it’s my much-loved time of year as the temperatures drop, the lights around Paris come on earlier and there are abundances of leaves on the ground, Just in case I drop face first.

So, what better way to get in the mood than to go to an haute couture show by Oscar Carvallo with his new collections for fall/winter 2014. Recently I’d become single again, and getting out and about mingling with some fashionistas was just what the heartbreak doctor had ordered. He’d also ordered that I adopt a cat called Willow and that I started reading a book called ‘Good Husband Material’… Yes, I have to hide the front cover when I sit on the metro, however the only first-rate husband material that I was managing to unearth in the so called ‘city of love’ was 100g of chocolate every night and a Starbucks by the river everyday. They were dependable, I knew what I was getting, and I kind of knew that they weren’t good for me. Sounds like the ideal husband, no?

Fine, I’ve turned in to the cat lady at twenty-seven but on the contrary, I do own a lint roll. Anyway enough of that, before I put you all off of Paris completely! It’s the 10th of July and I’m getting ready to go to the show and as I’m becoming a bit of a navy fan, I thought that would be the outfit of choice for the evening. I threw on the navy glasses to complete the look and tried to make my pile of hair into a decent form with it’s nest like appearance, I’m quite certain that I saw a few sparrows fly out of the back of my barnet, but it’s the best it was going to get, so off I went leaving Willow swinging from the clothes horse, keeping herself entertained.

The show was set in the town hall of the forth district, which is a beautiful building! I was expecting to be impressed, but I was blown away this time around at the shows! The collection was entitled ‘Save Our Souls’.

The clothes were literally stunning, created with structure and clean lines in mind but soft at the same time. The colours that we’re used were soft and pastel like (powdered rose) but with a pearl and iridescent texture at the same time. It really was a collection of something strong yet soft. Enjoy the photos and the video!

Press Release by PR agency Alexandre Boulais :

The Oscar Carvallo fall-winter 2014 collection named Save Our Souls (SOS), is a call for the redemption of the souls of the people who, like in Venezuela, fight to defend their rights and freedom.

From the innovation and research of new materials specific to the House, dresses of tulle, silk gazar and silk mikado, parade in tones of gold, white, gray, blue and pink, decorated with horsehair, pearls and hearts embroidered applications. Filled with futuristic influences, glittered tops and short dresses in pearly leather melt into tulle skirts. Phosphorescent strips and mesh dresses boost determined silhouettes with sporty looks.

In a heavenly and peaceful atmosphere, stand oxidized accessories that evoke the past fights: earrings, necklaces and belts designed with genuine cartridges and bullets, shields and bracelets globe “SOS” engraved and accessories such as open hearts. Iconic pieces from the House of Oscar Carvallo, such as the leggings monogrammed OC, accompanying the silhouettes in shades of powder pink and charcoal gray.

Last but not least, a wedding dress created by the visual artist Pancho Quilici is the highlight of this season offering a new thinking on clothing as a protective habitat.

After going through a hard time in life, sometimes you need to take a few steps back, rediscover who you are, and integrate the old you with the new you. That is exactly what I did after coming back to Paris after a great loss in my life and spent some time with my greatest loves : my friends, crêpes, night walks along the cobblestone streets of le Marais and fashion! It is my favorite time of the year in Paris : Haute Couture Fashion Week (woooo!!!!!! confetti!). Going to a fashion show/presentation in my opinion is the most exciting thing in the world. It can be compared to opening Christmas presents, you never know what you’re going to find inside, and this show was almost like a Christmas present to me. Christmas in July!

Luis Buchinho AW14 Fashion and Illusion

Paris Fashion Week AW14

Post by Paul Waters

It’s a Monday evening and I am standing in line at the Icram center a space more commonly used for music and performing arts, it also forms part of the Centre Pompidou complex. For those of you who don’t know the Centre Pompidou is a very controversial building in Paris that houses and hosts modern art and exhibitions on a yearly basis. It seems a very unlikely venue for a fashion show with its cold white walls, concrete floors and industrial feel. But there I stand clutching my ticket to Luis Buchinho’s show being slowly led by the crowds into the foyer of just such a building. The room is buzzing with excitement fashion lovers appear to be adorned with their most, craziest yet stylish of outfits. Jewels and sequins, textures and colors seem to set the cold room on fire when a set of doors swing open and we are led down into the depths of Paris. Read more →

Fatima Lopez AW2014 – Ad Naturam

Post By Charles Gillman.

It was a Wednesday afternoon under yet an additional grey Paris day. There I was on the Faubourg Saint Honoré collecting my ticket from Melissa for the Fatima Lopez show, I was also in the middle of having a casual nervous breakdown with regards to what to wear, Spanish designer, on the Champs Elysées… At the Lido! “JUST wear something sexy, her styles are always very WOW and sexy!” Melissa said interrupting my anxiety attack that I was oh so enjoying. ‘Sexy… Me? Are you joking?’ I thought to myself. It seemed as if the enormous glasses and the scarf that concealed Charlie’s chicken neck would have to stay home in the thirteenth district for the morning.

Viktor & Rolf #StreetStyle at #PFW #AW14

#StreetStyle #PFW Viktor&Rolf #AW14
So the street fashion and people watching was great at Issey Miyake, but Viktor & Rolf was fabulous!
Again on a lunch break I trotted over there, camera in hand and ready to shoot. I arrived at the edge of the Tuileries garden at the same time as Anna Del Russo. The slew of photographers all move around in a clump-like choreography just in front of their lenses’ subject. And the subject stops, smiles, poses and preens. Read more →

Paris Street Style #PFW #AW2014 Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake Street Style #PFW #AW14  … I skipped over to the Tuileries fashion week tent on my lunch the other day to snap some street style shots outside of the Issey Miyake show. There was a slew of photographers and bloggers all waiting for the fashion people to pour out of the venue so they could snap quick pics to toss up on the web.

Like so many have started saying, fashion week now happens just as much OUTSIDE of the shows as it does inside. Read more →

Oscar Carvallo Haute Couture Spring 2014 Collection

Oscar Carvallo SS14 « Voyage Cinétique II » image from official Oscar Carvallo site.

Color and movement dominated the Oscar Carvallo SS14 collection, shown on January 21st at the Paris haute couture fashion week. The collection is an inspiration and collaboration of two artists, Oscar Carvallo the designer and Carlos Cruz-Diez, the painter. Cruz-Diez create six tableaux (see here and here) for the collection and Carvallo’s creations were all directly inspired from them using fabrics and textiles, prints and construction of the different pieces to illustrate the works of art and bring them to life via the moment of the female body. Pastry Boy Dishes on High Fashion Design

Paul Waters, one of the sweetest guys in Paris (and he is a fabulous cake baker!) was darling enough to attend the Clarisse Hieraix fashion show for me for Paris Fashion Haute Couture Week. I have to admit, I am a little jealous that I couldn’t go, I love her work. But Paul knows her brand, so I was confident that I was handing the invite to a capable guy with style and a good eye for design.

Here is his beautiful review :

When one thinks of Haute Couture or luxury fashion, labels, brands and fashion houses such as Chanel or Louis Vuitton immediately spring to mind; but it is hard to imagine these names and brands that seem to rule over the industry with such power were once founded and created by people like Clarisse Hieraix.

Born in 1973 in Marie-Galante (Guadeloupe), Clarisse Hieraix received her diploma from the Chambre Syndicate of Haute Couture in Paris in 1999. During her initial studies, she perfected her craft while working on different collections, ultimately allowing her to perfect her style and personality. A style and personality that is very strong and evident in all her work, the Clarisse Hieraix woman knows exactly what she wants and where she is going.  Hieraix, may have a very long way to go before becoming the next “Chanel” but she certainly posses some potential and I was lucky enough to attend her latest show in Paris.

A Makeup Artist’s View on Haute Couture

I am thrilled to present a Paris Fashion Week haute couture show review from the darling and dashing makeup artist Charles Gillman, a British expat who has been making magic in Paris for three years now. I was lucky to get to work with him in a wedding modeling shoot and on my own Sweet Life in Paris video. And now he has been so kind as to lend his « plume » to Prête-Moi Paris for an article on Defined Moment’s Spring-Summer 2014 couture collection.

And without Further ado!

Defined moment’s show – 22nd January 2014

This winter I’m a makeup artist in hibernation, I’d spent most days nipping out to see clients and then whipping back home to spend my life by the Nespresso machine, as well as gluing my eyes to my laptop. Yes, Paris is fine-looking all year round, but it seemed easier and more tolerable from behind the window, avoiding the wind whipping, falling over undersized dogs and having disputes with fellow Parisians on the metro about ‘who got to the seat at the outset!’ (all these things are frequent occurrences.)
