An Unexpected Guest – book review

Anne Korkeakivi contacted me a few months ago and asked me if I would like to review her novel.
As I had just read and reviewed “Lessons in French” by Hillary Reyl I was eager to devour another novel based in Paris! And devour it I did. I had promised myself I would keep it for vacation reading but I just could not wait. And after I had read the first few pages I knew there was no way I was going to make myself be patient.

The story takes place in Paris during a span of 24 hours. The wife of a diplomate stationed in the City of Lights struggles with her past as she tries to prepare for her husband’s future.

Korkeakivi’s pens flows through beautifully detailed descriptions of certain parts of Paris, certain gestures and daily events in a chic Parisian life in the 7th, as her heroine prepares an import dinner party.

It makes me want to take more time for things like shopping splurging at the Grande Épicerie de Paris, or buy my flowers from a snooty Frenchman in a terribly charming florist shop.

The tale she weaves makes the pages turn, and her descriptions make you want to slow them down so as to savor each moment she describes in elegant detail.

If you love Paris you will lose yourself in this novel. It is also fantastic Summer reading.
